I was born in Liberia in 1966 and was given an amazing gift, the gift of education at a small mission school at Po River. My education allowed me to come to the United States and become an Information Technology professional.
In 2006, after 14 years of civil unrest and war in Liberia, I returned to the country of my birth and saw the devastation for myself. The entire infrastructure had been destroyed – highways and roads were impassable, electric power stations and power lines were gone, and hospitals and schools were in ruins.
During the war, an entire generation of Liberian children had grown up with no opportunity to go to school, and with the country’s economy in shambles, many children and young adults still have no way to receive a quality education.
I decided to do what I could to help solve my homeland’s crisis in education. I discussed my ideas with my longtime friend, Garswa Matally… and very soon Liberia Education Advancement Project was born.
L.E.A.P. is led by a great board, including Gordon Hodgson, my childhood teacher and mentor from my school at Po River Liberia. We hope that you will join the effort to bring excellent education to many students in Liberia!
